thanks for joining us this afternoon. a 45 lap race which doesn't sound like lotlap ice but mile wise and number of corn e-extremely challenging for these drivers. dave burns along with dale jarrett. thanks for joining us. . dj this track is like a perfect kpangs ofelevation change and corners. it's putting the first watkins glen and secondmid-ohio together. it requires skills from both. we talked about watkins glen how high-speedcorners they there, what they negotiateed

and mid-ohio they raced over 60% of that racetrackin second gear. you have a great combination here. you have four parts of this racetrack thatare very high-speed high braking areas which give you turns for passing. it's really a combination. they are going to be shifting gears. sometimes 14 to 16 times per lap so that willpath premium on taking care of your equipment also. >> we put you behind the wheels and took thefolks for a lap.

starting outside from where we stand. >> in turn one this is one of those high-speedhigh braking areas. you see drivers passion. another high braking area. go to turn five fastest part of the racetrack. another opportunity for passing but to makemistakes. a lot of this part of the course here fromturn six to turn 12 will be between second and third gear very calculated part of thetrack. then uphill after turn 14 back to the start-finishline.

>> you see some of the names. carousel king. canada corner. tells the different ways you have to race. the best of them in qualifying, alex taglianion the left for team penske teen his right, michael mcdowell. >> mcdowell didn't get the pole but got trackrecord. but both of these drivers, justin marks whowon at mid-ohio, owen kelly, great road racer, he's looking to show what he can do.

>> in row three, daniel suarez another joegibbs racing driver and ty dillon. >> row four looks like this. ryan reed. >> did a great job in qualifying. look for a good solid run. brendan gaughan former winner here. >> and blake koch and erik jones. >> justin allgaier has been outstanding. >> brennan poole in the 48 for chip ganassi.

darrell wallace jr. very impressive. and elliott sadler new deal this week withone main financial. >> two drivers right here needing good soliddays as far as points. they will be looking to see if they can geta top ten run. >> as we look at the rest of the startingfield we see the cars rolling off from the grid. the pace laps here, they are long just likethe race laps. the drivers going through right now as he'sbuckled in and taking his first slow pace.

>> with a course that has this many cornersyou're going through your mind once again where opportunity especially on the startof the race. where can i stay out of trouble. you want to make sure you give yourself achance. we talk about 45 laps. seems not very long but it's a long afternoonout here and you don't want to make a mistake. it's not a negative side just a side thatwill keep you in the hunt and in the competition. >> a lot of drivers told me hitting the simulator, hitting their eye racing as they went through their mind the 14 corners here at road america.

there are sand traps. places where drivers can get off track andget stuck. >> we had a lot at the practice session yesterdayespecially the second session getting interrupted. we also saw it happen in qualifying yesterdayafternoon. >> a number of these drivers will be goingto the rear of the field. eight drivers in total will have to go tothe back mostly for unimproved adjustments they had to make some for an accident in qualifyingothers to continue to make their cars right before this afternoon's action. we'll come back to road america to get themstarted in just a moment.

>>> the class of the field all afternoon, carl edwards, the crowd bringing him to victory. >> an absolute comedy of errors. just indicative how desperate these driverswill get when there's an extreme white checkered finish. >> i could do it. just being with the right team, right people. >> a flawless afternoon for one nelson piquet. >> try not be a big baby and cry on tv. >> nascar win number one for a.j.

allmendinger. >> roger if you're watching i love you. thank you baby! >> chase elliott, brendan gaughan on turnone. >> i tried get it three times and fully embarrassedi was not focused enough. >> he takes the lead! >> so happy. >> paul menard will win at road america. >> threw have a look at the six differentwinners in as many races here at road america

for the xfinity series. we welcome you back to this great venue andwith only one former winner at this track in the field this afternoon, brendan gaughanthe odds are we'll see a seventh. here's a look at our race today, dj. >> we talked about just 45 laps but don'tlet that mislead you. long time out here for the drivers. you can see the fuel window 1820 laps. we'll have them go farther on that. just hoping for a little bit of caution tohelp them out.

>> countdown to green this afternoon you metkenny habul. you'll ride with him in the 88 car for juniormotorsports this afternoon. one of our cameras in erik jones advancedauto parts on board. and michael mcdowell in the 2 car for richardchildress racing and the pole sitter, on board camera by alex tagliani. as you look at tag each time i do it i can'tbelieve he hasn't won in this series yet. >> he's such a talented driver. he put himself in position for that to happen. and today could be that day but he's got hiswork cut-out for him.

there's a number of other very hungry talenteddrivers that would like to go to victory lane. you can see how much it means to these drivers. >> more stories from pit road before we getstarted. >> brendan gaughan would be very theep usethe four set of dry tires that he's been all located with today to get to victory lane. however if he has to go to the two sets ofwet weather tires that's okay too. as you saw he's won here in the damp beforeand a lot of people may not remember brennan's career began in small open wheel cars runningon road courses. skinny tierks wet conditions, he learned alot about throttle control and feels that

can help get him to victory lane again. jim, he'll start third here today. >> ralph, the joe gibbs cars thoughtfullypitted all in a row but they got three very different agendas. daniel suarez, erik jones and then owen kelly. in the 18 car the driver from down under, very fast at mid-ohio a couple of weeks ago but had a hard time keeping that car on thetrack. this car, the 18 car has won nine times thisyear. they would love to make it an even ten.

>> to do that, like i ran here in 2013 andfinished third, some of the key points anthony racetrack to me start down in turn one. why? it's a fast corner, heavy braking, in secondgear but also the restarts. it really tempts drivers to make it threewide in turn one. i can tell from you experience it tightensup. from there you head to turn three where kitbe tempting to make a pass. when you get there you have a long straightawayinto turn five heavy braking zone the best place to pass on the racetrack and possiblya place to use first gear.

from there you they'd a series of corners, six, seven, eight and nine out of turn five. up there you see a car heading into turn sixthat you want to be single file. not a lot of room. hard to find places to pass and that bringsyou back into the kink, a place that's very fast and you definitely want to be singlefile which brings you down towards turn 12 and another opportunity to pass also knownas canada corner. this corner can be tough as you approach itfrom another corner and start braking very hard a place that's easy to make mistakesthat leads to you 13 and 14 to complete the lap.

those places on the racetrack that gives thedrivers the best opportunity to pass but could be the biggest places to make a mistake. >> it reminds me of something there. this is the longest road course they willdesign on, the one with the most elevation changes but not the widest. >> you have to pick and choose your placeand there are sand traps here. but also this grass is very wet. there was a lot of rain that fell here. so if you get off on that you have the possibilityof getting stuck or hitting something pretty

hard because you talk about how narrow itis. you see the concrete barriers. >> it appears as the cars make their way aroundhere the track drying up to start on the slick tires. remember at mid-ohio the race started thatway as well but then rained very quickly at which point nascar called the dns damp, gavethe teams the option with pit stops and change those tires. they went to them and needed them early on. >> they did.

we're not looking at that. you look around and see the low clouds andsome fog around the area. you just don't know what to expect here thisafternoon and i think that's the great thing about this. we've seen these drivers be in this type ofsituation before a couple of years ago when brendan gaughan won they to go back and forth. >> great to watch, guys did a great job atmid-ohio but dry track. slick tires. nascar racing.

this is a show we want to see. >> it's going to be outstanding and for alot of different reasons. we talked about all the stories that are there. these drivers that really need a win, wantto win and have nothing to lose in trying to get that victory for themselves and thenthat group of drivers that are just looking for a good solid day staying on this narrowpace. >> that corner that they just came throughthere, very tricky. may not look that way. the blind spot coming up the hill and left-handerthey make before the final two corners might

be a trouble spot here this afternoon. the pace car pulled in very early at the bottomof the hill and then the field is left in the hands of the flagman, and alex taglianihas control of the field to start. here's alex on the left, white 22 for teampenske to our right the 2 of michael mcdowell. coming towards the flag stand now gettinga good look at them, if he likes what he sees the flag person throws the green flag. you see the opportunity. and we are green at road america! will he make a move.

yes he'll try to get second from michael mcdowellin the first turn. side-by-side, down to two, alex tagliani tryingto get away. and he has it. >> he was able to take that spot. early on he has a fast race car. one of the best cars that everyone saw yesterdayin that final practice session. >> parker took us around the track and thisis one of the areaser pointed to. great passing opportunities coming down thehill but hard on the brakes, downhill dj tough to make it stick.

>> difficult consequence if you get in toohard. >> still side-by-side back through the middleof the field. everyone is make their way around this fourmile course. >> turn six you want to be single file. >> ryan reed in the red 16 saying to the orange19 of suarez i'm faster right now taking a look. teammate of 19, the 20 of erik jones takinga look. now down out of the carousel and back up around, that turn that goes to the right for so long before they hit the high-speed back and throughthe kink.

very sharp right-hander. >> getting out of that carousel, not ableto stay on the gas and carry the speed off the corner you set yourself up for a possibleconfrontation in an area you don't want to be. >> alex tagliani looking good all the waydown to turn 12, canada corner. trying to get on that speed. >> tires are still good. they want to make as much speed as they can. separate themselves.

get into a rhythm and be able to race at thispoint in time. >> alex tagliani former winner here. now looking for his first win but a long, long way from being over. completing lap one, alex tagliani will lead. and we pointed out those top three or fourbreaking away with their road course skills. >> they have great skills and they have reallygood race cars. you put that combination together makes itvery, very difficult. alex tagliani will check out a little bit. >> really discipline that was made tougherwith all the wet at mid-ohio but he said i

want to race in this ride this weekend. i think our cars are better and i want tostate of ohio can do it. >> he learned something from mid-ohio. and he said he felt like he's proven thatwhat he can do in the rain he would like to show he has that opportunity and the skillsto get it done here on a dry surface this afternoon. >> one of those things very simple the stiffnessof the springs and suspension in the rear end of the car. a little soft at mid-ohio.

>> that's what you do as a driver. you learn. he doesn't have a tremendous amount of experiencein these cars. but learning those type of things and gettingto work out at mid-ohio but probably more with his skills to drive in those kind ofconditions. >> kyle larson. >> there's just not much separation. alex tagliani is really good on these corners. if he makes a mistake in charging a cornerlittle bit too hard.

>> measuring each other. good run. down to 14. >> this will give him a chance. he told me yesterday, he'll take a big chancedown in turn one. he said it's hard to out brake someone. he'll try to give it a try. >> huge difference right there going downinto that corner for lap three versus what will happen at lap 40.

>> so as the leaders move through a coupleof cars on pit road early. >> a crash down at the end of pit wall. front straightaway>> you're right. it's 0 of garrett smithley. something broke on that car. smithley a hard right turn. what's going on with the 20. >> we thought they were bringing erik jonesin to top off fuel. we heard a lot about fuel strategy.

but team did go ahead and change four tires. doesn't appear tube tire problem right now, nothing on the radio other than coded phrases telling us why erik jones hit pit road. >> you see the 0 there of garrett smithleywrecked on the front stretch. his crusade he was going as straight as couldbe. something broke. unfortunate to end their day there. >> dj, you were looking down towards turnone there, getting ready to observe the passing that happened upfront and you saw the smoke.

>> saw the car that was heading towards thatinside. unless something breaks not something thatwill happen. very unfortunate. everything with the driver is okay okay, buta hard impact. >> you see the speeding cars coming on thetrack. that was bizarre situation for the driverof the 0. s>> so while the safety workers attend to the car there, garrett smithley lowered the windownet which is an indication that he's okay. >> you can see right now what happened witherik jones in the pit of the 20 down here

in there, that tire was flat spotted on lapnumber two erik jones immediately road in and said he thought he had a tire going down. set up but that was going to be your problemso crew chief decided to pit erik jones right away. >> got to get in quickly there. that was going become a huge issue. >> so jones with four fresh tires on his car, garrett smithley thankfully being taken to the infield care center. we'll join you at road america in just a moment.

in just a momentmalibu. it was awarded "most dependable midsize car"by j.d. power. it looks great. wow! what is happening? oh my gosh, it's going up! but the malibu's not the only vehicle thatwas awarded. this is mind blowing. the chevy camaro, equinox, and silverado hdwere awarded most dependable as well.

daniel suarez originally from mexico now livingand working here. kenny habul one of the australians originally. down on the bottom you see a little look ofthe 74, nick ham moan, one of threes wisconsin drivers in the field this afternoon. his story is very interesting. driver of the 74 is a 23-year-old and hisgrandfather was one of the original businessmen in this area who was like hey would you liketo build a racetrack here in elkhart lake. he got that done. worked in his family shop and went racing.

he won that whole thing in 2014. his dream was to race at elkhart lake in nascar. met him a couple of years ago right here intown to get something fixed. nic kept in touch and started at watkins glen. >> what a great story. you just never know where that opportunityis and when it may present itself. who would have ever thought we would havean xfinity race -- this series started mostly in the south built we have more drivers fromaustralia and from the state of wisconsin than we do from north carolina.

>> only two drivers in this field from thestate of inning. >> go figure. >> pit road is full of great stories. joe gibbs racing usually they use their sprintcup pit crews for the xfinity team but those guys are in michigan. so kelly has a veteran crew, actually owenkelly has a contract crew. daniel suarez is using jgr training team. these guys you see right here, owen kellyyou see that's a veteran team made up of guys who have won all kinds of pit road championships.

you look at armstrong, foster, they won the2000 pit crew championship 16 years ago, the driver for that car, jeff burton. so i asked these guys if they needed oxygen, geritol. they appear to be doing good. >> i spoke with justin marks about his firstwin coming at the last road course race at mid-ohio. he said it took a while for it to sink in. i was thinking about how i shouldn't be thatkind of guy. he said i never would have expect this tocome true because he said i'm not a guy who

grew up in a racing family. he didn't even really go to races until hisdad offered him the opportunity back in '95 when he got straight as that they would dowhatever he wanted. he wanted to go to the indianapolis 500. he was bitten by the racing bug. after that as he got to high school and beganhis racing career so he's really a bit of a late bloomer and now a nascar xfinity serieswinner. >> great story. he said in victory lane i'm not a big timeracer.

we looked at each other and disagreed. >> alex tagliani leads. still under the caution here cleaning up onthe front stretch. kyle busch, the 2015 champion! toyota. let's go places. we asked u.s. cellular customers to show usall the beautiful places they get coverage with our strong signal. to you by -->>> a place you want to be bottom of the hill

as they charge down to turn five. good viewing. >> great spot. we saw jones jones there, they can hear us. >> but you talk about erik jones in spottingthat tire. could have been right here where he did that. what happens there is you get in a littlebit too hard, you lock the brakes up, stay out longer. and then you get up to the point.

he was very lucky that tire didn't blow youwant before he was able to get back around and get to pit road. >> after we gave our pit report, jones jonesroad in and said you're pretty much right. he was trying avoid ryan reed. ryan reed got squirrelly in front of him. when he locked up that tire you're right ittore it apart. so really happy. that was erik jones making the call. i think we got a problem.

and he was brought right in. if we get another lap of caution, jones jonescame in and topped off the tank on this last if we get another caution you might see alot of other cars start to take fuel strategy and go down on pit road to top off that fueltank. >> two others cars that we're looking at thefuel intake and maximize fuel strategy is 33 of brandon jones as well as ryan reed. it's to allow them more options as we getlater in the race. >> 13 total cars came down pit road. armstrong's 28 car pitted from 20th the firstto make the break.

>> good strategy here. >> we talked earlier about, if you can outrun these guys who are upfront you need something totally different as far as your strategy. the likelihood of this going green until theend flot. but you put yourself in position to do somethingdifferent than the fastest cars. >> alex tagliani to the driver's right inthe 22 car as the leader he's the control car. he'll have that defending position as theygo down the first right-hander after the long front straightaway.

>> justin marks able to take advantage ofthe initial start of the race to take that spot away from michael mcdowell. that driver lining up not in control of therestart, starting on front row. the driver in control of the restart usuallygets a better jump that should be his advantage sponsorship that leads to it the third placecar to be in a better position too. he's already in a good spot as you go downinto turn one because of the right-hand corner. michael mcdowell will get a better start thanwhat he had at the initial start. >> opportunity to return the favor for thedriver you're riding with right now. >> tricky part i talked about earlier, can'tsee over the top of that little hill.

that's one of the things that is giving thedrivers some trouble here this weekend. >> part of the character of road america. >> and it will be more so as the racing rampsup and they get more laps here today and opportunity presents themselves as the tires get wornsome and some drivers, the handling gives way a little bit. . so it gets very, very challenging for thesedrivers. they are coming up the hill. and anticipating exactly where the start ofthis race is and when it will happen. if you're in the back of the pack you won'tbe over to hill and seeing the green flag

you're relying on your spotter. >> elevation changes all over. as alex tagliani gets ready to complete lapnumber six. he looks to the starters stand and he'll seethe green flag once again. >> green, green, green. >> that resort zone just before the flag standthere and he gets another good one. here comes michael mcdowell back on the inside. everybody clean through one. on that little bend in two and heart brakingin turn three.

>> nice job of trying to hang on to that secondspot. might have been a little contact there. michael mcdowell will get into that secondspot. going through the gears there. 15, 16, maybe 17 if you're in trouble shiftper lap. >> i talked to do you yesterday about hiscar and he said they were fast fright the very beginning. three wide, justin allgaier in the wrong spotmaking it in turn six. that 90 on the inside, that black car.

he's an interesting story. now back in eighth position. davison saw this car running well. he gets challenged from jeremy clements. does he see him? no. contact. clements gets the spot. >> more pavement than provide because theyspent a lot of time first couple of years

out on the grass and a lot of accidents inthat part of the track. >> let's just say this. davison is learning how those guys race. >> there will be minimal contact to get thejob done and make the pass. >> got off into the grass there. dangerous spot. just coming out of the kink and heading towardsthe canada corner. >> the black car of alex kennedy this weekend. there he is.

right by brennan poole. so much on stake on the outside looking inthis weekend on the chase standings. >> yeah. >> look at our graphic eight laps of 45. no need to push the issue early but you wantto get the spot you can get. wallace in the 6 car. chastain and kennedy still side-by-side. good battle back there with the 16. >> really good look at that.

the 20 of erik jones he runs in 21st rightbehind ryan sieg. >> everything kind of worked out and thenhe had that issue. >> clear. >> yes, you are now. >> make a pit stop under green flag conditionsand then able to come in and get fuel too. so he's got a few laps as we get to that pointof green flag pit stops, he can stay out a little bit longer and all of that will dependhow much he decides he wants to stay out and how much new tires might pick him out, stayingout there on older and worn tires. >> now a position on ryan sieg.

one of the drivers that started at the tailof the field. they had issues to take care of. we talked about his story. he did what he expected in the first two roadcourses. >> i think what we're seeing this time ofthe year, these teams are on lower budget. their parts are getting a little more worn. you see erik jones trying to pick up a spothere. but that's what affect these teams in racing. how important that would be.

not only to just be a part of that club andhave a chance at the championship, but for the opportunity to have more money and betmore sponsorship along the way. >> habul chasing the 44 of j.j. yeley. he's got almost a second lead over michaelmcdowell. there you see the gap there. owen kelly in the other orange. >> here's justin allgaier. jim?

>> bubba wallace, ing brought number 6 cardown. those transparent cars thinking fuel mileageif you went another lap under caution. bubba and teammate ryan reed decided to hitpit road and see if they can work together to get up front. so that's why they changed. >> see the driver there, blake koch off thecourse a little bit, one that can't afford to be losing any spots. he just overshoots the concern. only cost him a couple of spots.

he was inside the top ten when that happenedor around that ten spot. >> koch has it back on track. we noticed in that series of mustangs pitstops, teammates from roush-fenway came down with the yellow car. >> erik jones using up all the racetrack andmore off that corner. >> that's where you're carrying a lot of speedout of the carousel and then smashing against trying to get that back straight where youhit the kink and hard racing >> you're right behind another driver. you can't see all of the racetrack where theasphalt pavement runs out and pile up and

see if you can make pass. sometimes you get just a couple of wheelsoff there. >> brennan poole trying to take advantageof blake koch. he gets by. >> 18, 20 laps on fuel. 45 lap race. the contenders are coming in. the 2 car of michael mcdowell is on pit lane. parker?

>> you see michael mcdowell getting out ofsecond place not much to say on the radio. they have been one of the fastest cars allweekend. four different tires, no fuel. >> four tires, sunoco fuel as well for justinallgaier. >> they brought dillon's car down too. put fuel and tires in that car and an updatefour on blake koch. as long as his temperature didn't get above210 they said keep going and de. >> that's a good point. he got off in the mud and grass and you neverknow what that will do the cooling of the

front of the car. >> he cut that grass and you get on the grilland cause an over heating problem. looks like kenny got a problem. >> rolling in. >> you see that. he's going behind the garage and what's happenedhe has an axle issue. not a working axle. i don't know what that means but this carhas to fix that issue and get back out. >> so habul was on track.

and as soon as he knew he had a problem, djhe's waving to everybody else not run him over. >> up don't want to give this car any morethrottle. you want to get around, make sure they understandyou have an issue. the more throttle he gives the more that carwill steer. this can happen for a couple of things. could have happened after a pit stop whenyou threat car down. the timing gets off there. he can start the braking prostles or as yougo over, it can happen there as you're driving.

that allowed regan to close up the opportunityand get his rear bumper. those are things you learn as a driver. when you don't do thisvery often you know who exactly you are racing against. he understands in stock car racingand nascar racing in the last lap, a lot of things could happen. people are willing tomove you out of the way. i think he's going to use his front bumper.>> regan smith unapologetic. >> i went for it. i won the race. here's somedisappointing finishes after running so well. we know he has the speed. can he figure outa way to close it, restarting here. >> he'll be aggressive. but michael mcdowellgets the start that he's been getting going to be tough for alex tagliani to get to him.but a lot of things happen and justin marks

will try to do what he can do. daniel suarezwants to win on a road course. he'll do what he can. it just takes getting bottled up andget that lead driver, michael mcdowell making a mistake, wheel hopping or overshooting thecorner to allow another driver to come in from fourth, fifth, sixth in alex tagliani'scase. >> you see cars parade back hereunder caution.getting back to 13th place car. nice run for ryan sieg. can he keep it.>> what a tremendous job. he restarted in the top ten. to come from the back. had issuesyesterday in practice. had issues in qualifying. had to start dead last in this field. whata great job. if he's able to make the chase he'll look back on this day and say this iswhere we did things right to allow us to get

slowed the field down a little bit more thanwhat nascar wanted to see. i don't think it got out of the framework of what nationalcar will allow a driver to do but be more cautious with that speed and give everyonea fair opportunity. as a leader you're not worried about being fair you want to makesure you get downturn one you're still the lead and do things as you want. it's in hiscontrol to do the right thing. knees now nascar is watching.>> michael mcdowell trying to win for the first time in nascar xfinity series and comingup on three to go, 12 short miles for michael to hit his mark, to hold off daniel suarez, justin marks, jeremy clements, alex tagliani and win for the first time in this series.

can doe it? what kind of a challenge willhe get downturn number one as they -- it seems like an eternity.>> long way up and keep that pressure on other drivers. that's what he can handle right now.>> rolling to the restart zone. you can see the flag stand. he knows where the zone is.he's zod be smooth. michael mcdowell on the restart. surz this time. here comes clementsbehind suarez and justin marks peeking through with that yellow car.>> if suarez can stay on the door that can open up things for justin marks.>> contact. daniel frying text. trying to get around marks.>> jeremy clemens in this situation just wants to make sure he can finish this race wherehe's restarting here.

>> alex tagliani and brendan gaughan gonethrough. the black car gone. the white car alex tagliani trying to get past clements.>> right here, down here, heavy braking. you see that wiggle from suarez. and behind himthey are collecting. and contact with alex tagliani. they make it through but alex taglianihas to check up. >> so alex tagliani lost. alex in troublecoming downturn eight lost it. >> so much action going on. here comes brendangaughan. trying to get in front of clements. >> he knows brendan gaughan has fresher tires, settling in. good finish he's worked for all day. >> michael mcdowell now spreading from danielsuarez. good restart for daniel suarez.

>> he did a great job of staying on the doorbut michael mcdowell threw this car off into turn one. able to do it under control. he'sdoing what he wants to do. >> brendan gaughan through to four. how muchmore does he have? the driver from las vegas who has so much fun in this series, and firstcareer victory right here. he got his win back here in 2014. got fresher tires. we knowthat means a lot. it is enough he can get up and challenge michael mcdowell.>> brennan poole has sixth place. sadler, clements, justin allgaier all right with him.>> really looking down the inside there. protect line.>> jeremy clements lost a lot of spots but he has more tires and more laps on his tiresthan these cars he's battling with hit-and-miss

costing him value points to get inside thetop 12 of the chase. >> we talked about jeremy before. small familyoperation. you think about a transmission and how much it goes through here, dj andthe technique and feeling it takes to do well. >> here comes brendan gaughan trying get thatthird spot from justin marks. >> trying to get his way to the front.>> coming to go. just over four or five miles remaining here at road america.>> michael mcdowell, he would like what he sees. these drivers racing for that secondcaution. every one wanting to be there. brendan gaughan trying to get to the outside.>> you can't do that in the carousel but guantanamo will give at it try. can't quite find thegrip there.

>> what a great effort. might have enoughspeed to make at that run at justin marks. >> caution is out. alon day is off and stuckin the gravel. that is just at the top of the hill off of turn six. alex tagliani cameoff just a little bit earlier. >> brendan gaughan has any chance with thosefresher tires, they took the opportunity that he was going to need. also if everybody hasbeen saving enough fuel since that last pit stop to ensure to make it into an overtimesituation. >> see the reaction in the michael mcdowellpits. new crew chief up there, justin alexander going for two in a row. he won last week withaustin dillon at bristol. and this track provided the first career win.>> you can see he's there, saving as much

fuel as he possibly can. we haven't talkedabout that we would be in an overtime situation. the overtimeline is a long way. we talk aboutthis being a four mile course. it's almost half the distance. you have to go almost twomiles to get over where that is between turn seven and eight.>> so you see michael mcdowell right now checking things out. shutting the car off. turningit back on. he has to maintain speed with the pace car.>> that's the key. make being sure you can keep up with the pace car. you can get yourcar refired but obviously very important at this point in time to be saving as much fuelas can you. brendan gaughan is in a situation fresher tire and more fuel so he should bein good shape right here.

>> so michael mcdowell is the leader rightbehind him. michael mcdowell used to drive for joe gibbs racing behind him a joe gibbsracing driver who would like to take that victory today and a first for them. four active tracks in this series but thatcompany has not won at and this is one of them.>> daniel suarez got as good a start as you hope to get from that second spot last time.michael mcdowell just was flaw legs in making his and getting down into turn one carryinga lot of speed. so can michael mcdowell do his job again if suarez can somehow get anotherrestart just like that and sit on his door he can make things very interesting.>> so, the drivers will be in nascar overtime

when the field goes back to green. we're goingto find it for you here on this four mile course in just a moment and show you wherethe overtimeline is that they will have to get to.>> daniel suarez is doing everything he can to save fuel right now. they think they areokay they just don't want to chance it. but that team just got a warning from nascar sayingdaniel suarez has to maintain his car's speed. as you can see in thi he vascillates betweengoing back and forth. >> the referees understand what you're tryingto do. you don't want to put yourself in position. >> they crossed the overtime line. you seethe white line across the track. that's on the way to turn eight from turn seven. it'sabout halfway around the course here but it's

a long way from the start-finish line. therules are that after they take the green they have to get all the way there without fullcourse caution to make at it legitimate attempt. once they do that then they clear the lapand a half whether the caution comes out or get back to checkered.>> so in between seven and eight. last restart we had contact in turn one. go down to turnfive cars spinning, cars that didn't spin. turn six the hard left-hand there are, a lotof contact. so trying to get to this line is going to be quite the challenge.>> we showed you the overhead shot. you can pick out turns seven and eight and nascarwill make sure the leading edge of that line is broken by the leader in order to make ittook like a good attempt.

>> they will make it where we get these fulllaps in. if there's a car spinning and cars off they will get them a proper amount oftime because it takes a long time to get back around there. if they can get away from whateverincident they have that's what nascar is looking to do.>> once they get a good attempt they will make multiple tries get that attempt. oncethey get that good attempt they will finish the race.>> multiple is the key word. no number set on that except dark.>> no lights here at elkhart lake. conditions now very prime for high horsepower and lotsof action. scheduled for 45. >> what about brendan gaughan going back infourkts dj. he's been moving forward. does

he have enough to get past the front race.>> i'm not sure at this point in time the cycles on the tires heating them up, slowingthem down and cooling them off. how much of a different that will make. a lot of thattime here has been spent not going at speed. so is it going to make a realm difference?and his desire to win here. how much will that play into this. is he willing to justgive it everything? he's in a good points position as far as the chase goes but canhe afford to take a real chance in doing whatever he needs to get himself in position. >> ryan reed running ninth doing what he needsto do. let's go back to 62 and parker. >> he has enough fuel. he came on the radioand said we're good to lap 63. this team over

here in 62 was elate when they saw this cautioncoming out thinking they have the sfiend tires to go up and contend against their teammatein 2 car. moving over one box over is the 2 car and crew chief had a big massive bitof reaction there of disappointment when he saw that caution come out and he told michaelmcdowell, save fuel, save fuel. we should be good there but please save fuel. definitelytwo different stories between these two rcr teammates.>> very intriguing. consistency on the road courses a key to maintaining points. therehave been a couple of drivers who have done very well and had top tens so far at bothattempts. and will now end up there again because they are all in the top ten rightnow. justin allgaier, seven at the glenn since

mid-ohio. there's brennan a pair of eights.>> very solid in both of them. chance to win. >> pool two ten place finishes. poole runningsixth. elliott sadler banged up, beat around on this road course running eighth.>> all of those guys in the top ten have done an outstanding job. look at justin allgaierand elliott sadler, very solid over the years in getting good finishes.>> making junior motorsports proud with their team run. another driver have some successhere too today. he's not known as a road racer, but ryan reed. i was talking to him earlierin the garage area yesterday. talked about erased modified on wednesday night. he was victorious in both of those. also saidhe got engaged. a lot of good things happening

has done a nice job throughout the entireday inside the top ten. you can do all of that. we talk about these road courses andhow difficult they are as far as points racing and making the most. can you do everythingright. here he is at the end of what should have been the race at 45 laps and be in agood solid spot. anything can happen in these next two laps. i hope he has an outstandingrun and finishes right there or makes up a couple more spots. you know as a driver onthese restarts they get so crazy and you don't want to work so hashed all weekend long andhave things go awry in these last two laps. >> a lot of hard work already done. two laps, maybe more depending if they get to the overtimeline yet to go. remember after they resume therace they have to get down past turn seven

osborne has won.>> oh, wow.ch >> oh!>> and no doubt, he is a worthy w 2016 lucas oil pro motocross champion.>> the final gate drops of the 2016 season are heading your way right now.>>> the championship's. >> reporter: locked up, but that doesn't meanwe're not in store for a great finale of racing in the lucas oil pro motocross championship.the 2016 ironman national. yes, ken roczen clinched the number one placein the 450 class last week. you can see the huge sigh of relief. a whole year to defendthat title after winning it again in 2015. cooper webb, first ever championship for himin the 2050 class last week, as well. so,

the big question is, will that sigh of relieffor these riders lead to them letting up a bit today? maybe open the door for someoneelse. we start with our 250 class today on nbcsn. jason weigandt and grant langston withyour highlights. here's the mistake from webb. he's stuck under the bike.>> yeah, the inside leg got caught in a weird position. he had to get off the bike. losta ton of position in the opening lap. >> and then, out front, little further upfront, watch the 44, goes down. the muddy track, that would happen to a lot of riderthes. that would help webb catch up. 19th early. the 26 of alex martin getting around.this is for second early in this moto. nice job by martin to power around.>> yeah, great drive around. and watch this.

a very rare mistake from the youngster, faulkner.gets back on the track. doesn't lose any ground. this kid was on fire. still keep that biglead going. >> was leading early. webb had the mistake.everybody else battling behind him. the kid kept it on the track and maintained his lead.webb is trying to catch alex martin. this is for third. goes down.>> went for it. >> yeah, he tried. that would ail low martinto lock down that third place position. and austin forkner, all of 17 years old, secondcareer moto win. but this is the first time he's done it in moto one, and the way we doit is, we'll rewrack them and race number two coming up, if forkner wins this one, he'llhave the overall win. for more, let's send

it to georgia lindsay at the go pro startinggate. >> zach osborne, this morning in practice,we know you had a few issues. you're still coming off that overall win from last weekend.the track is incredibly gnarly. first moto didn't go the best for you. howare you feeling for this last one of the season? >> yeah, i feel good. a little disappointingthe way things have gone today, coming off that last weekend. we missed our gate in thefirst moto because the bike was late to the gate. just been a little frustrating. we'reall trying hard, but it's been tough, so, hopefully just end on a high here in thislast moto. >> thank you, zach. best of luck.>> that's the goal for zach's and everyone

else. end it on top for 2016.r 16 >> jason: give you the 411 and show you howwe go racing here. we have two classes competing. and each race, two motos. each moto is 30minutes. and two laps in duration. we already raced those first motos. we'll total up thatcoming up next, to determine today's overall winners in the two classes. two classes, tworaces, do the math, we can turn into two winners. that's your lucas oil 411 here at the grandfinale of the season, at ironman. that's the gps device on the top of the riders helmetsand give us us some race insight. >> grant: this is pretty cool. this is frommoto one. the big uphill triple that we've been talking about. so, if you look here, forkner hits the uphill triple clean, and

so dsavatgy. clearing the jump cleanly, forkneris able to carry more momentum going forward. so, ironically, identical takeoff speed at42 miles an hour. forkner jumps five feet further, and that's the key. shortly afterlanding, she going 20% faster than savatgy. and if you look, forkner continues to carrythe speed through the turn and he's still faster by 10% there. so, shows you have toclear the jumps clean. let's have a look at the kawasaki track map and we'll see thatsection. drop the gate, ironman. start climbing up the hill. hopefully get the hole shot.that really helps. make the right, come down, a little bier braking zone. turn left. that'swhere the fram mechanics area is now. you turn, scrub this jump. get your weight backthrough the gearbox. third, fourth, up the

hill. hit godzilla, big step-up jump. turnon the brake. big stepdown. if you can hit that clean, it's key, just like the triplestepup that we were just analyzing, the red bull triple stepup. 250 riders are just battling with power toget all the way over. this boulevard over here, fastest part of the track, and then, into the roughest, tightest part on the track there. absolutely brutal. then, you kind ofstart going through the words. a lot of sweeps and turns. a lot of line selection, becauseof the rain, the way it's developing. over the lucas oil jump. the cool lucas oil bridge.another one of these rollers. get the power to the ground. this is a big -- it's a quadnow, the jump. land, sweep through that turn.

another little drop in here. one more leftand then you come to the final right-hander. a little rhythm section. go over the lucasoil finish line jump. and that's a lap here at ironman raceway.>> jason: only 20 years old, but our new champion of the 250 class in lucas oil pro motocrosshas an old school way about going racing. as far as the fame and the money, he mighthave been better taking this summer off, because he had a wrist injury. but he's not interestedin the long-term. he's interested in winning every championship he can win right now. andbecause he's an old school competitor, he came out and won this title. you're new champion, cooper webb. >> when the 250 national championship thisyear, it was a dream of mine, since a threw

a leg over a dirt bike. to win a nationaltitle is something that a lot of people don't accomplish, you know, to be racing againstthe best of the best 250 riders in the world is pretty cool, and to be able to win it issomething special. yeah, coming in with a broken wrist, it was a question mark, youknow, i had -- it wasn't even sure with myself, but i had a good support team with me, withthe whole star racing yamaha team and we all had a plan. with an injury like that, you'renot sure exactly what can happen. it can go one of two ways. to be able to fight throughit and get to the top and, you know, eventually got the red plate and went from there. toovercome that and come out on top was pretty gratifying.

another bump in the road but we got throughit. as a racer, you know, we're stingy. we're never satisfied. for me, the next goal isto move my career into the 450 class and go for championships there. the reason i workmy butt off is to try to be a champion. so, that's the goal, is to go and do the bestwe can, but at the end of the day, go after supercross championship and outdoor motocrosschampionship. >> jason: mission accomplished for him thisyear. see what he does on the big bikes next year. here is the ktm keys to the moto.>> grant: well, are we going to see a first-time winner? that would be kind of cool. minimizeyour mistakes. this track has been changing all day. we've seen riders make a lot of mistakes.i think the guy that can make the least mistakes

will win it. and you are only as good as yourlast race, and guess what? this is the last race of the season. go out, finish with abang. make it interesting. it will help your stock go up a little bit in the offseason.>> jason: all the riders want something to remember going into the offseason on a positivenote. if you are austin forkner and you're looking for your first career win, that wouldbe huge. i think it would be just the same for everyone else to stop the rookie fromgetting that win. he's basically that one small puzzle piece, that confidence beingtoo tough to handle next year. we'll see if anyone can stop the 214. he won the firstmoto. he's trying to finish it off in moto 2.>> grant: oh.

>> jason: 23 going to try to lead them in.forkner's right there with him. >> grant: great start from forkner. he's beenputting the starts together. that's what he needed. two good starts the same day. justdon't make a mistake. he already wants to go off the jump inside. forkner not wastingany time. >> jason: and cooper webb right there in third,so, this is a great little battle that's developed. plessinger, who won this race last year, forknerand our new champion, cooper webb, in a little dog fight. alex martin there, too.>> grant: forkner looked like he cased that jump a little bit. alex martin just sweepingthrough. almost takes the front end out. so,

look at this battle. the battle for thirdis what you have to watch, because watch. webb wants to get it there he goes up theinside. whoa. >> jason: side-by-side and they're going tojump the triple together. >> grant: i can't believe webb was able todo that. just shows you how much it's dried out. it takes that line away. with webb, youjust get him riled up. he's like a pit bull. he's going to come after you.>> jason: and he gets stronger as the moto goes on. and alex martin, a bobble.>> grant: he was skiing through there. >> jason: we saw both riders making mistakesin these ruts, as plessinger tries to get away. oh, tonus off the track. tough breakfor the swiss native. trying to build something

positive here at the end of the season. andnow he's gone off the racetrack. meanwhile, what has happened to osborne? georgia?>> georgia: they were working on the bike right behind me. zach is heading out ontothe track now, but he's already almost a lap down. i guess there was a problem with thebike and they had to change the clutch, which takes time and to make sure you get it right.obviously, zach looks really upset. he looks mad about it, but he did jump on the bikeand he's headed back out on track. he said he's had so many issues, in that interview, even, just then, so, tough break for zach, but obviously, he's going for it.>> jason: wow. and tough break for aaron plessinger, who just about crashed. that was 99% of acrash. he stayed upright, but he lost enough

time. look who is back in the lead again.austin forkner. >> grant: yeah, he looking today. he lookedlike he was impatient. he was going to get around plessinger. for plessinger, i know it might sound weird, but the youngster, he was flying the first moto. he's got good line selection. he's gota good flow. you can't go wrong with it. but yeah -->> jason: learn something from the 17-year-old rookie.>> grant: it sounds crazy, but you know what, as a few wise people in racing told me, evenwhen you're the best, even if you are a cooper webb, and you're the man, there is alwayssomebody doing something better than you.

don't forget that.>> jason: what a dog fight early here in this second 250 moto. forkner, webb, martin. theyhave passed each other several times already in this moto. it was this turn that webb made-- oh, a mistake there. couldn't get the drive to pull up next to the 44.>> grant: put it this way. i don't really believe the 44 and the 17, you know, chatwith each other during the week or hang out. they've had some issues in the past. bothtough competitors. and, you know, i've said it before -- not a matter of picking sides, who is right or who is wrong. it's racing. you're supposed to get in the other guy'shead. if someone's not mad at you, you're not trying hard enough.>> jason: ask cooper webb, he lvs to play

that game all day long, no problem. plessingerin second, trying to keep forkner in sight. what a battle. you can see the top five allin one section of the track. around the outside, webb. makes it happen.>> grant: i'm telling you, i would put the pit board out and go, rail the outside. carryyour momentum. it's deeper and heavy and slower. the guys are coming in fast, almost havingto come to a standstill to get to the inside. slow. keep it going. but man, just to addon that osborne point -- >> jason: yeah.>> grant: i know this is a relatively new team, they've made some good progress, buti think that's a product of maybe trying to do too much without enough testing and theyare having reliability issues. and a lot of

times, it gets frustrated, it's like, oh,man we haven't had a problem with this before, and this just reared its head. for a guy that won last week and now basicallya lap down after one lap -- that's got to be a little frustrating, especially at thelast race. >> jason: and he told us at the top of theshow, he missed the gate because they didn't have the bike ready for moto one. that's sixmechanical problems for that team over the last four weeks of racing. as you are watchingweb and see yan cirillo battling it out. and alex martin right behind them. plessingerright in front of them. and austin forkner beginning to get away. two-second gap forthe rookie, looking to go one-one.

>> grant: well, not really riding like a rookie.riding like a veteran. i mean, he's flying, because, at that one point there, it was himand webb, they were almost side-by-side, so -->> jason: he's responded to the challenge. and plessinger, who won this race ago, hadthe lead and it came unraveled for him, able to recover, still in second. but you haveto figure he might deal with the 17 before it's over. here's plessinger, trying to getaway early in this moto, and he does everything but just about crash right here. gives upthe lead to forkner.s up the lead to forkner geico motorcycle, great rates for great rides. >> jason: august 28th, red bull global rallycross heads to atlantic city and every point

counts if in the race for the championshipthat's sunday, august 28th on nbc. look at the sights here off the racetrack at ironmanraceway here in crawfordsville, indiana. you can see the display for that and this is thelegends and heros display. some great championship and race-winning bikes of motocross's pastthat's a traveling museum that comes to all the events, lucas oil pro motocross. and thisis not an old bike or an old rider you are looking at a teenager, 17-year-old austinforkner leading the way. how about this monster energy up and down today, first lap crashsavatgy, pretty quiet in sixth and forkner, the youngest rider, leading the way. he'snot out of the woods, as he winds his way through this tree-lined track he still hasplessinger and webb in striking distance and

they are the types of riders, plessinger andwebb, i'm talking about, they do their best riding in the second half of the motos forkner'slead, 1.7 seconds, it looks good but there is a long way to go.>> grant: and that's a lot of pressure for a long time you know, for someone like forkner.and right now, i don't want to say he looks a little ragged, you can tell he's tryingto push, figure out how to pull away from these guys or pick the pace up. but once hegot around plessinger, it was like plessinger sunk his hook into the back of him and stayedten bike lengths back, give or take, but -- for the last few laps that's tough when you areout front and you have all that pressure behind you, and you try everything, you can't shakehim, it's like, what do i have to do? georgia,

you have more about forkner?>> georgia: talking about the pressure of plessinger behind forkner, that's why youalways want to practice and do motos with people faster than you. no matter what the situation is, even if youare practicing, you still need pressure behind you austin forkner rides with the likes ofbenny bloss, you know, tons of the fast guys, so he gets used to the pressure. so, rightnow, he should be able to hold it together. but he is still a rookie, so, it is stillgoing to be touch >> jason: and plessinger rides with koob ecooper webb. they are not strangers to this situation. plessinger starting to use differentlines and show a wheel to forkner let the

kid know he's back there. i say kid, becauseplessinger is 19, he's an old man compared to forkner.>> grant: oh, yeah plessinger, from the inside, still able to do that big red bull triplestepup and i think that was able to take it from a ten bike length gap to three or fournow >> jason: you can see plessinger is readyto run with him he won this race last year similar weather a year ago, with a lot ofrain leading up to the race and led to a similar track as far as these deep ruts. plessingeris always good in those situations actually racing in the woods, offroad, as well as motocrosswhen he grew up. he's used to adverse conditions. i saw him before the first moto today. hesaid, man, why are they cleaning up the ruts

i want it to be as nasty as possible so, theruts are a little bit nastier in the second moto seems to be working for him.>> grant: yeah, they did move the sludge off and everyone's going to have their opinionon how the perfect racing track should be i am more of the one that goes, hey, leaveit, you know? if the guys are struggling, then, you know work on your skills, i don'tknow, like, struggle but you see some of that dirt pushed to the side but just like we hadsaid, too, might be smooser in the beginning, but coe moto two, it's going to be rutted.>> jason: that's the problem in the mud races. you get the one line situations. you can'teven dare go out there. so, you have to run one line on the insideit's opened up fairly well considering how

much rain we've had. and how about it rightnow, webb is back in third and giving up a little ground, then, about three seconds isthe distance now, webb has had some fantastic closing in these motos this year the countdownclock, we are now through the 30 minutes there's time for him to make it happen, if he canup the pace. but he's not applied a ton of pressure it's really a one-on-one fight forthe lead and i thought plessinger was there, ready to attack, but forkner's responded.>> grant: yeah, he -- he's having a day wow, the bike is startingto really bounce aroundon those braking bumps. but yeah, he's -- i think he's doing what he said before, we saidin the first moto, don't look backwards, just keep looking forward. i think what happenedis, he started thinking about plessinger now

he's like, okay, look forward, pick your line,do the thing, cut out the mistakes, you'll be fine>> jason: halfway through the moto, 15 minutes to go and in 15 minutes, you can save 15%or more on your insurance. call geico you saw webb go by a little bit closer to plessingerthan before fourth place is sincianciarulo you have to get around the lap riders thatare down in the ruts so, a couple of battles starting to build show you what it is liketo ride the track. this is san sir rell low from the first moto today and you hear allthat, the sound, that popping sound is him getting pelted by rocks and dirt>> grant: and trying to find clean real estate out there.

oh>> jason: too clean. all the way off the track. and can't find a way back on it is legal.you can't just make up ground. >> grant: e's trying to find the safest placeto get back on without getting an advantage >> jason: tough start in the first moto alittle better here in moto two. >> jason: battles all over this track, crawfordsville, indiana you have mitchell harrison, chris alldredge and mitch oldenburg. blue, greenand orange bike, all fighting for a piece of the top ten. old oldenburg's tenth.>> grant: and hill right behind them, justin hill, coming back from injury a couple roundsago. a couple great rides and now, trying to get back in this battle, basically juston the outside of the top ten, in 11th oh,

maybe not for very long.>> jason: oh, he and oldenburg, the red bull ktm teammates crossing each other up justbehind these two harrison and alldredge only his second motocross of the year, after missingtime after a big crash at the end of supercross top ten, last week in his first race back.and looking to be in the top ten again, with ninth place right now. so, good job by alldredge.young rider out of the pacific northwest. battle for third, alex martin has gotten aroundcianciarulo, he's trying to get around webb >> grant: where did he come from>> jason: i don't know you don't normally see webb get reeled in. a little bit of amistake for the 17 so, a-mart got a shot at it.>> grant: good for him

>> jason: did you see webb clean that corner, leaned over going to be tough for alex martin to deal with that>> grant: i'm wondering if something didn't happen between webb and cianciarulo oh, webbwent down that's a full-on crash all the work he did to pull away from those two is overamazing that the bike kept running, considering he was completely unattached. there you seehow close alex martin was so, martin is going to dig deep to try to get him for a podiumin the moto. so, that's motivation enough alex still right there oh couple of dabs ofthe -- that's not the cam newton dab >> grant: well, he is from north carolina>> jason: he won a supercross, he did the cam newton dab over the finish line. so, heis familiar with the dab, that is true but

he's got to deal with a-mart right now, whois just not letting him go >> grant: yeah, alex martin, got a good stylefor this kind of track right now. watch him stand deep in the turns. speed on the pegdoesn't, you know, make any aggressive moves >> jason: that's our leader, forkner. onlyabout a second and a half over plessinger. you can see plessinger working that outsideline, as well he's not let forkner off the hook ten minutes and two laps left. two ofthe young superstars of lucas oil pro motocross, their time is now and they are battling forthis moto win who is going to win it who will go out on top forkner, plessinger. find outafter this. what i love most about tempur-pedic mattresses... is that they contour to yourbody. you just have to lay back in my tempur-pedic,
