i'm dr. joe neely, and i practice with thebarton oaks dental group. i'm going to talk about eating with false teeth. the issue witheating with false teeth, is stability. since false teeth rest against the gum tissue, andthe gum tissue is compressible, you don't have the rigidity that you have, when youbite down hard. you're simply depending on the load being distributed around the gums,to support the force of chewing, so it's important when you're trying to eat with false teeth, that you take smaller bites, that you try to keep food on both sides of your mouth,so that as you chew, you have function going on, on both sides, so that you don't dislodgethe denture. obviously, the more structure the denture has, the more surface area thatit has, to share the load. the other option,
in terms of eating with false teeth, is toput something in between the bone and the denture, like an implant that has a ball attachment, and then a attachment up in the denture, that once the denture is inserted and snapped intoplace, it now is rigid, and you can load up force. with a tissue supported denture, youcan put one tenth of the amount of force, as you can with an implant supported denture.
