crowned teeth that are sensitive to hot and cold

dr. b here of askthedentist.com. so, a reader asked, “i’ve developed receding gums. what should i do about it? what can i do about it?” it’s a very good question. a lot of people ask that for those of you that are aware of it. and usually, you’re aware of it because your teeth becomes sensitive to cold and to like a salad dressing, an acidic, balsamic vinaigrette,

brushing, mechanical abrasion, hot coffee. all those things will make the tooth sensitive. and it’s a rather sudden thing. why? and that is because your gums have receded. the gums recede for many reasons: there are genetic predilections, over-brushing, grinding is the big one (grinding will lead to receding gums), poor dental care,

fillings that are irritating the gums, crowns that are over-contoured near the gum line. but really, the most common thing is not seeing your dentist often enough to reduce the tartar build-up that is occurring right at the gum line. and of course, when the gum see tartar formation at the gum line, what do they do? they recede. they move out of the way and try and stay healthy. and so, really, what you need to do is you need to see your dentist

and ask them what’s causing the gum recession and what can you do about it. you have to address the problem. you have to find out if you’re grinding. you have to find out if you’re over-brushing. usually, it’s a multi-factorial thing. it’s many things that are happening. and of course, age causes a recession. even in a healthy mouth, you can get a little recession. so, it’s a very complicated subject.

it’s a good question to ask because it determines a lot. you can get root decay later on in your older years. and the need for crowns and root canals goes up exponentially. so, receding gums is a serious thing. when you look along in the tooth —you’ve heard that expression before— your tooth is not actually growing. it’s looking longer because the gums are receding. so, talk to your dentist about your receding gums

and find out why your gums are receding, and then address that specific issue or the issues involved with the recession. thanks for asking that question. and thanks for listening to askthedentist.com, our youtube channel.
