[ music ] >> providing a safe and secureenvironment is paramount in helping children to learn well in school. a new cs mott children's hospitalnational poll on children's health shows that many parents are concerned about theirschool's ability to keep their children safe. >> we asked parents to assign theirchildren's schools a letter grade with regard to issues about children's school safety. we looked first at the issue of overallschool safety, and how parents felt about their children's safety at school.

we found that parents of children insecondary school, that is high school, were much less likely to give an agrade than were parents whose kids are in primary school, elementary and junior high. we know that bullying and bullying preventionare on the minds of adults when it comes to children's health and wellbeing across the country. so what we wanted to do was get a sense ofparents' perceptions of their children's schools and what they were doing about the preventionof bullying and other forms of school violence. only about one out of four parentswhose kids are in secondary school felt that their schools are doing a goodjob with regard to bullying prevention,

compared with two out of five parentswhose kids are in primary school. these results indicate that many parents stillfeel there is a lot of room for improvement when it comes to school efforts to preventbullying and other forms of school violence. another issue that is important tomany parents is being notified in case of a school-wide emergency and knowingthat their children will be kept safe. what we found is that parents are most satisfiedwith this issue when it comes to issues of school safety that we measured. when we compared the parents' responses aboutschool safety for kids in private school versus kids in public and charter schools,we found some dramatic differences.

the parents of kids who are in private schools, on every single safety measure wetook a look at, are more satisfied with their schools' performance than theparents of kids in public and charter schools. also, parents of children inprivate schools are similarly happy with their school performance whether thosekids are in primary or secondary schools, which is very different than what we see forkids in the public and charter school segment. what this poll shows is that parents arevery concerned about bullying prevention and are quite aware that their schoolscould do more on this important problem. as children get going in this currentschool year, parents can get involved

with bullying prevention in two main ways. first of all, many states have alreadyset up bullying prevention programs. these are being carried out on community levels, and parents can get involved in safe school, safe community programs where they live. but right at home, there's a wayparents can make a difference, too. they can listen to their kids, who are theireyes and ears on the ground about issues of school safety, and especiallyabout the issue of bullying.
